Breeding Program
First and foremost we subscribe to the principles of the Verein Deutsch Drahthaar (VDD) breed organization, and all of our breedings are in strict accordance with their regulations. With each and every breeding we strive to improve our kennel's breeding stock, and contribute to the Drahthaar breed as a whole. We believe one of the most important factors in breeding any dog is to actually know the dog you are breeding. Only by personally raising, training and testing a dog can one fully understand its true character and talents. Every litter from v.d. Roten Schlucht Kennel has been produced from at least one parent which we have bred, raised, or trained ourselves, tested and hunted! In addition to being good hunters, our dogs are also our companions and friends. Through careful selection of stud dogs, we produce healthy, good performing, versatile hunting dogs that are people oriented, and bred to adapt easily to a family environment.
We have chosen to keep our kennel operation small. Our intent is to produce quality, not quantity, drahthaars. v.d. Roten Schlucht Kennel is striving to perfect the Deutsch drahthaar with the ultimate goal of producing hunting dogs with hard dense coats that exhibit a strong desire to locate and retrieve game in the field and water with the temperament to live as a family member. v.d. Roten Schlucht drahthaars possess strong natural abilities, are intelligent and mentally stable, highly trainable, and have sound structure.
Producing good puppies is no accident. A good breeding program starts with the careful selection of the parents. Our females are "people" oriented. They have the temperaments, trainability, and desire that I want in my hunting partner. Being a small kennel our breeding females are also my personal hunting companions and are hunted regularly on upland birds, waterfowl and furred game. We have also used our dogs on blood tracking for big game recovery.
Stud dogs are selected because they possess the personality, natural abilities, and coat type that compliments each of my females. The decision to use a male is never based on his location or on VDD test scores alone. A stud dog must be HD-free and have been tested or had his progeny from previous litters tested for vom Willebrand's and Hemophilia B bleeding disorders. Our females are also HD-free and have been tested clear for vom Willebrand's bleeding disorder. New puppy owners are provided with a booklet of pertinent training and health related articles, including such subjects as crate training, canine behavior, housebreaking, vaccinations, obedience training for German tests (VJP and HZP) VDD history and test schedule.
Proposed breedings for our females are planned at least one year in advance. Long range planning allows me to evaluate puppies and stud dogs and make adjustments in my breeding program if necessary. v.d Roten Schlucht drahthaars are registered with the Verein Deutsch Drahthaar (VDD) breed organization in Germany. A deposit of $200 will put you in line for a puppy and the price of a v.d. Roten Schlucht puppy, either male or female, is $1000.00.
